Jezebel tried to kill me

[caption id="attachment_1513" align="alignleft" width="300"] Bad Bucking Bronco [/caption] Well not really but thats what i'm calling it. The better half was taking his lesson my my trainers event horse and i tacked up the Bo and was going to ride her for the second half of his lesson then Sammy was going to get on Jez. She had been kept in the night before to keep Circe company because i'm dealing with lameness issues with her (post to come about that once a definitive diagnosis is had) so JezaBo was a little up but not to bad. The better half was riding in the lower gymnastics ring looking really good by the way, he was trotting over poles and getting the lazy Rep to move forward. Sammy was explaining to…

Circes new Manolos

Barn tales, Life with Circe, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_1507" align="alignleft" width="271"] Circe checking out Patty[/caption] When Circe came up lame a week and a half ago and i saw the bruise, I put her on rest and waited it out to see if it would manifest into an abscess or get better. A week went by and it didn't get better. The lameness did get a little more pronounced but she didn't do the abscess turn and ever come up three legged lame. My farrier was due to come out and i figured she would let me know if i was in abscess world or not. Circe still had no pulses, heat or swelling but she was defiantly off at the trot on the right front and over the week she was off  she was on lame…

Wardaca Horse Trials

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_1492" align="alignleft" width="200"] Heading out to the X country course[/caption] I went to the horse trials at Wardaca. These are rated trails and it was a lot of fun. Wardaca is where my better half first started taking lessons. They have a lot of land including a big cross country course. In fact they do cross country schooling there. One of the Jr riders at my barn was going to be moving up to training level on Sunday and i went down to cheer her on and to take a few snaps. She was riding Brilliant Truth a sassy  red-headed mare who is known around the farm as Baby. They kicked ass in dressage, no faults on cross country but had a couple unlucky rails in stadium that took…

[caption id="attachment_1483" align="alignleft" width="200"] Not broken[/caption] Circe has a stone bruise. Shes getting some time off and I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't turn into an abscess. Time will tell. The redhead has thin soles and this isn't the first time shes had a bruise. I'm using Durasole her feets (i swear by the stuff), giving her some time off and crossing my fingers. Thats pretty much the plan. Oh I gave her some Bute first day just because i don't want her tootsies hurting her to bad. While she has time off Jezebel is being ridden everyday. Perfect example of why two horses is a good thing, when ones broken.... Jezebel is starting to look really good. Her excess weight is coming off and shes starting to muscle up.…

In the Equiery

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_1469" align="alignleft" width="255"] Published![/caption] I have a couple of photos in this months Equiery. The Equiery is the local horse paper in MD (and some parts of PA and VA) but its Maryland based. If you are looking for horse support services like boarding, hay, training or ring building its the go to place. They also keep you up to date on local horse laws and zoning changes. Its a really good resource and the paper is free at tack stores and feed stores around MD. Their actual offices are just a couple miles from where the ponies are kept. I've submitted a couple of photos from a couple of different events i've shot in the last month or so and they've used pictures from both events. The Thoroughbred…

Plugging along

Barn tales, Training
[caption id="attachment_1466" align="alignleft" width="200"] The better half and the event horse[/caption] Everything is plugging along according to plan. The horses are doing well, progressing and thriving. Ive been getting plenty of ride time on both horses and my confidence on both improves daily. My better half is taking lessons every week on my trainers event horse (an un-raced TB) and getting better with each ride, its really nice to see him figuring the whole thing out. I on the other had need improvement. Besides being out of riding shape it seems i'm posting from my hands. Thats not something i've done before. I'm going to chalk it up to me having had too much time off regular riding and my unfitness. I'm using my hands for balance.. bad! Michelle was…

Half week in review, the DERP edition

Barn tales, Life with Circe, Life with Jezebel
[caption id="attachment_1454" align="alignleft" width="300"] horse politics[/caption] Wednesday: Michelle's day to ride and it was a but of a hectic day for me. The better half needed a new helmet my Troxel which he had been riding in was not working anymore for him and my Tipperary didn't fit quite right so we went to Dover at 10am mind you and spent all the money. He got a One K (its pretty awesome) Then a mad dash to get to the barn by noon and meet up with Tina and Sammy. Tina is still thinking about selling Wasabi and i thought hooking her up with Sammy to this end was a good idea. So varoom the the barn we raced and Michelle was already riding Jez in the upper ring. I…

Back in the saddle again

Barn tales, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_1439" align="alignleft" width="225"] Riding Jezebel[/caption] I've been riding Circe but i haven't been riding Jezebel. After she out me  on the ground last Feb and was acting out so badly i gave her the rest of the winter off to figure out what her deal was. Ulcers.. hind and gastric was the diagnosis and since that time we've teated the ulcers and moved twice Jez is back in steady work with both Sammy and Michelle. Since i've moved to the fancy eventing barn I've been on her one time. After Michelle rode i cooled her out and was super nervous. Which pissed me off, i haven been nervous like THAT with her before. As a result i've been sticking with Circe working on building my stamina (which sucks) after…

No steps backwards

[caption id="attachment_1356" align="alignleft" width="300"] Showing Jez the pace[/caption] I put the girls to work only after a few days off to get settled. They have both been ridden by Michelle and now Sammy the new trainer and they both did great. Jez did try to rear with Sammy but she gives enough warning that she rode her though it and Sammy doesn't think that her rearing is anything that cant be fixed and i shouldn't worry about it too much. I almost cried when i heard that. Circe is close to calm being ridden in the indoor so its likely i'll start riding her next week. I'll cool her out at first then when that goes well i'll just start riding her. Sammy rode Circe back from the indoor after…

New things

Barn tales, Life with Circe, Life with Jezebel, OTTB, Training
[caption id="attachment_1348" align="alignleft" width="200"] Walking around[/caption] It was both horses first day working with Michelle at the new place. The new trainer was going to be there as well so her and Michelle could get on the same page and all that jazz. I was both nervous and excited. We moved in last Sat i gave the girls Sunday off and Monday i started to get them used to the new place. Taking them for walks around the property bridle paths, getting them into the wash stall and used to their new cross ties. Everything is going really well. They are settled into the routine and their stall suites. Those stalls are freaking huge! Michelle arrived and we started with Jezebel and went down to the indoor arena. One other…
