Winters Break

Barn tales
As i'm sure its obvious to anyone paying attention by now, i'm taking a blogging break. I'm taking a reading blogs break too though there are 2-3 i'm still keeping my eye on (i'm looking at you The Owls Approve. Happy to see Archie's improvement!) I was getting burnt out saying the same things over and over and over and over. I found writing about the days horse activities were stale and if I was getting bored writing I can only imagine that it was boring to read as well. Couple that with its winter nothings happening but cold, snow and bad footing. Add to that volatile mix a couple of broken ponies and who had anything interesting to say. Too often I read so much filler and if i'm…

PRP two week check

Barn tales, Injury, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
Jez had her two week check after her PRP treatment. The results are great!  Shes healing really nice and my vets is really happy with how her progress is going. Shes gotta stay inside for another two weeks until the next check which she isn't thrilled about but she  the stalls at my barn are stall suites (double in size) so its better then being stuck in a tiny box. Plus... drugs help. Circe is turned out with Rep now and the two redheads are getting long well. Sometimes they are in love and want to make red-headed babies and other times they are bickering like Lucy and Ricky. Other then that... winter can suck it.

The Lisbon Old Fashioned Horse Parade

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_1708" align="alignleft" width="300"] Mounted police![/caption] What can I say about the Lisbon horse parade. Its billed as an "old fashioned horse parade" and they sure aren't kidding. Especially if by old fashioned, you mean before organizational skills were needed in setting up a horse Christmas parade. That doesn't mean it wasn't wonderful and amazing because it was in fact both those things but it was also a mess. A hot, hot, mess. [caption id="attachment_1709" align="alignright" width="300"] Robert Taylor, hunt master of the Goshen Hounds[/caption] Maybe 500 horses were in this parade. Mounted police (the only police presence at the event I might add), eventing farms, horse rescues, the Goshen Hounds hunt club, local schools and so much more participated. It was a spectacle and being that the weather was good…

The days of winter

Barn tales, Life with Circe, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_1695" align="alignleft" width="200"] Rep and the better half before the bad eyeball[/caption] Stuff has been happening even things besides me bitching about the cold a tradition with me as soon as it gets below 40 on a regular basis. Interesting stuff, boring stuff and of course the daily grind stuff. Rep was hauled back up to New Bolton for his eyeball recheck and the results were giant big two thumbs up! He is healing great and that makes me very happy. My better half is happy too because hes been unmounted since Rep's eye took a turn for the worse right when they were of course really doing well cantering around and doing walk trot transitions and poles. In a couple weeks Rep can get back into work and…

The blahs

Life with Circe, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
Circe got kicked and has a sore muscle and is off. Jez is still off from the mystery leg scrapes and her possible extensor tendon strain. She just finished her course of SMZs. Reps is getting his around the clock meds at home (every four hours, yo!) The only horse without issues in the barn right now is Luna, the pony. Its been cold as hell and I cant find my base layers that I packed away over the summer and I need more smart wool socks. I've been looking for excuses not to go to the barn cuz well winter... I hate it. The good news is we have an official working student and shes great and I love her already.

Wash-o-matic

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_1099" align="alignleft" width="239"] Squeaky Clean![/caption] Spring really should be here but its not. Its gonna be late coming this year. Which if course sucks balls. Usually id be done with blankets by now but im not i still need them which means they are gross, dirty, muddy smelly messes of blankets. I gathered um up, stuffed them in to garbage bags and high tailed it to the local speedy laundromat, cuz theres no way i was sticking 1 blanket, 2 sheets, 1 cooler and 6 saddle pads in my washer at home. They have triple capacity machines at my local 24/7 mat which is awesome. I took my blanket wash with me and i went mid day on a week day to try to avoid large clothes cleaning crowds,…

Hay, hay hay…

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_1061" align="alignleft" width="225"] Giant new hay loft minus new hay[/caption] I got to my new barn a little before 11am. It was freezing but i needed to be there to hand over a check to the hay guy and to move my hay around. I met a bunch of people, some from the barn next door and also my new barn-mate. I got the low down on her horses and we came up with a plan for introducing them in the field when i arrive. Also we found out we share a vet! Good news as we might be able to save on some barn calls down the line.  So I waited in the freezing fucking cold as the temperature dropped and no hay. They were late. An hour…

Baby Besos

Life with Jezebel, Training
I woke up with a start at 3am and was up almost all night. The weekend had been rough on me. It was predicted to be a sunny and warm 55 degrees on Sat and i was finally going to be able to ride both my horses. I was pretty excited about it. I got to the barn and both my horses sheets had been removed for unknown reasons and they were covered in the thick wet deep mud that covers their field right now. Other horses in their field had their sheets on which added to my utter and complete anger over the situation. My one day to ride in two weeks 20 days had turned into a day to give both my horses baths. I ended up being…

Attack plan: Step one

Life with Jezebel, OTTB, Vet
[caption id="attachment_971" align="alignleft" width="225"] Derp[/caption] I have a multi pronged attack plan to figure out/deal with Jezebels acting out issues. Vet, Chiro, Saddle fitter, training. Yesterday I had the vet out. The plan was to give Jez the once over and see if there were any physical issues that could be the cause of her, kicking out, bucking, rearing and all around bad attitude when working. It was the first time the new vet was going to evaluate her. We went over her history with the right hind and what issues she  currently having so that Dr. L could get the full story. Then we went to the lunge. The ring was an icy, slushy, snowy mess but i was determined to get her out there on the lunge. Which…

Last gasp?

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_965" align="alignleft" width="300"] The sand ring in two feet plus of snow[/caption] Maryland at least in my part yanno the DC burbs doesn't get much snow. In theory and usually. This winter has been a little different from everything everyone is telling me who have lived here longer then the three years I have. Its unusual to get snow like this. I'm actually more annoyed with the frozen ground then the snow its self. Under all that pretty white fluffy stuff is really hard ground that often has been chewed up a bit leaving hard points and mounds that can bruise hooves, especially in the paddocks. Cie la vie, it is what it is and theres not a lot i can do about it. No indoor means less riding…
