Right in the middle of her forehead

Injury, Life with Jezebel, OTTB, Vet
[caption id="attachment_387" align="alignright" width="225"] Look Ma what I did![/caption] I showed up to the barn mainly to give Alex the head caretaker on site instructions on administering Jezebels new oral Ace compound. Were using this to dope my pony so she can have a couple hours of turn out in the small round pen a day and she wont go nutso running and jumping around. When I got there my pony greeted me like she always does with a happy nicker and I went right over to nuzzle her and smooch her face. It looked to me like she was sweating under her forelock and I brushed it away only to find a rather large gash on her forehead that was dripping blood. Yeah that wasn't sweat. How did she…

Mind Lost

[caption id="attachment_383" align="alignleft" width="300"] Yummy Noms[/caption] So the controlled grazing isn't really working. I'm blaming the weather. Its been like thunderstorm central around here, every day predicted chance of thunderstorms and when the pressure drops my horse likes to go nuts. Ive been taking her in the round pen where its a smaller enclosed space for her to graze. I  have her at the end of my lead and i do use the whole racehorse chain over her nose thing. In out last trip in the round pen for a graze it didn't take long before she was all four feet off the ground. I was able to get her back but man oh man it wasn't easy to calm her down. Then she decided that pulling back to break…

Things Are Happening

[caption id="attachment_377" align="alignleft" width="225"] Naked![/caption] I finally got the pins out of my hand last week, that's the good news! The bad news? I can hardly move my finger, I can't bend it at 2 knuckles and my DR is likely going to send me to expensive physical therapy that I will have to pay for out of pocket. Even if I had a horse to ride right now I wouldn't be able to, cuz I cant hold the reins in my left hand. Ugh this sucks so hard. I hope eventually I will get my range of motion back but we will see. Jezebel is progressing well with her rehab and I've been cleared to do more with her so I've been taking her out for hand grazes. Its…

Winter is a bitter mistress

Barn tales, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_320" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Its cold mom!"][/caption] It's been a long time since I've written and not because nothing is happening. With work, and the bitter terrible winter cold (Yes, I'm being dramatic) I've been unmotivated to write. So an update is in order. Jezebel is wonderful and just as pretty as ever.  Over the fall we had a really bad case of thrush with took her out for a while. It was the cause of her mystery lameness (after much searching) I found the best stuff to battle her persistent thrush was "Tomorrow" my vet wanted me to go the bleach route but that didn't seem to be doing the trick but the Tomorrow worked and eventually she got better and I was able to start riding her again.…

Let The Games Begin

Barn tales, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_303" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Red=Kicker Pink=Awesome"][/caption] The horse farm where my pretty pony lives is a boarders only barn. This means that there are no school horses, lessons don't have the right away and every one has equal access to the facilities. Most people are pleasure riders, with a few eventers, a few judge trail riders and a couple of show jumpers thrown in for good measure. It's a pretty good group of laid back friendly people. My farm puts on a games day once in a while. Which is basically a judged obstacle course. It was open to the whole barn and about 15 of us decided to participate. It was to take place in the our door arena (weather permitting) and there were to be 20 obstacles to…

[caption id="attachment_290" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="looking for food, no doubt"][/caption] My horse is fat! First my barn manager mentions she thinks shes getting fat, then another boarder who is also a vet said and I quote "wow she sure lost her race horse physique" so yeah shes off the hay stretcher now, cuz yanno... fat. Fat and happy though... she's a very happy horse.

New Friends

Barn tales, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_80" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Best Friends Forever "][/caption] Things are so different here then in California. For example, turn out. It's not something that's done in the heart of Los Angeles. There its pretty much stall boarding only. I did for some time have my previous mare in an "in and out". A stall with a little extra out door area attached but that's as close to turn out as it got. Here in Maryland turnout is the norm. Horses spend half to more then half of their time out in a filed with other horses. In the winter then come in at night, in the summer when its hot they come in during the day and when the weather permits ( spring and fall) they are out 24/7 at…

Stable hunting

Barn tales
[caption id="attachment_57" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="On the hunt for the perfect barn"][/caption] After I decided that an OTTB was what I wanted I needed to find a place to keep her. I of course started with the Google. Unlike Los Angeles where you only have a handful of places to board your horse Maryland and Virginia have a lot. I know I needed a place as close to my home as possible so I could spend more time with my horse and less time on the road getting to my horse. The first place I went to look at was about 10 minutes from my home. As part of my process in picking a place I like to show up unannounced. I want to see what the place is like when…
