[caption id="attachment_1824" align="alignleft" width="300"] First turn out in a week[/caption] It's been a full week so it was time for Jez's recheck. Dr Engle came out since he was the vet on call when we had our injury. Hes stuck with us for this injury! The plan was to unwrap her, cut the dead skin flap and put her back into regular turn out and work. Best laid plans.. cuz when he took the bandages off Jez had other plans. She was reattaching the skin flap that should have died off and growing skin. That wasn't supposed to happen because it was a downward facing flap. My Jezebel is a good little healer!! So new plan, bandage her up and wait another week. If shes not to crazy she can…

Welcome home ponies

Injury, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_1814" align="alignright" width="250"] Bloody mess[/caption] It started like any other morning. 7:30 Am and i'm out at the barn to feed. There was a freeze over night and the grass was white. Damn it! My weather app didn't say below freezing. Luckily my ponies are pretty fuzzy already. I threw some hay into the paddock and went to prepare their feed. Thats when I heard the noise. A deer had tried to jump over my the fence and got caught up in the high tensile. It made a terrible noise, I saw the deer get loose and run like her deer hair was caught on fire though my pasture all the way down to the trees at the end of the field. The horses heard it too and freaked…

Winters Break

Barn tales
As i'm sure its obvious to anyone paying attention by now, i'm taking a blogging break. I'm taking a reading blogs break too though there are 2-3 i'm still keeping my eye on (i'm looking at you The Owls Approve. Happy to see Archie's improvement!) I was getting burnt out saying the same things over and over and over and over. I found writing about the days horse activities were stale and if I was getting bored writing I can only imagine that it was boring to read as well. Couple that with its winter nothings happening but cold, snow and bad footing. Add to that volatile mix a couple of broken ponies and who had anything interesting to say. Too often I read so much filler and if i'm…

Rep is home!

Barn tales, Off Farm, Vet
[caption id="attachment_1677" align="alignleft" width="225"] Ready to go home![/caption] Rep is home. He came home last night. His eye is sutured shut and medications will be administered though a subpalpebral lavage. He will need meds every few hours for about a week. Sammy and I meet up today to coordinate schedules to make sure Rep is covered and gets his meds on schedule. He will go back to New Bolton in a couple weeks to get everything removed. Right now i'm just happy hes home and that the surgery to save his eye went really well. It is also mad crazy expensive. Sammy set up a GoFundMe so please pass it around to all your rich friends!

Friday night emergency

Barn tales, Vet
[caption id="attachment_1671" align="alignleft" width="300"] Sammy and Rep[/caption] The vet was scheduled for a Friday at 1:30pm She was scheduled for Rep my trainers horse who has been battling any eye issue. The right eye has had issues for the last couple of years. Usually its controllable, this time not so much. The vet has been out several times trying to figure out why hes not getting better. Turns out along with his chronic problem Rep also has a strange bacterial infection that eye and the regular antibiotics were not fixing the problem. Add to that a new ulcer and day after day the eye got worse. On Friday the vet said he needed more specialized care and he needed it now! Then the race to get Rep to New Bolton…

Fall horse maintenance

Barn tales, Life with Circe, Life with Jezebel, OTTB, Vet
[caption id="attachment_1652" align="alignleft" width="300"] Jez loves jumping the coop[/caption] It  was that time of year again, fall shots. I also had my vet float the girls teeth. My vet does a hand float and though i was thinking id use a dentist this time around seems "horse dentist" in this area is synonymous with "never return voice mails" Since my vet does a bang up job and she was out for shots anyways i decided to go with her. Jez did almost all of her float with no sedation, we only had to use a little bit to get the way far back. Seems my girl has a narrow but highly arched palette. Which might facilitate a bit change for her in the future, well see how she goes over…

The Circe saga continues

Life with Circe, OTTB, Vet
[caption id="attachment_1553" align="alignleft" width="225"] The two fancy sport models[/caption] The last month or so has been hard. Harder on The Circe Effect than me but hard none the less. Her lameness issues were not progressing how anyone hoped they would. To add insult to injury she came up lame on the right hind a week ago with stocking up in both hinds. The farrier, then the vet came back out (because I'm made of money) and bruising was again the diagnosis. Again there was little improvement so i asked for a Lyme test. Why not start ruling stuff out. Sammy and i pulled the blood and i drove the tubes to the vets that evening i got the email. She didn't test negative on the snap. What that means is…

The week in review

Barn tales, Life with Circe, Life with Jezebel, OTTB
[caption id="attachment_1540" align="alignleft" width="200"] Heath Ryan, Moe and his rider[/caption] The week has been long and hot and not a ton is going on.  Both ponies are still out of work. Jezebel is still being treated for ulcers, shes not as reactive when palpated and is much less cranky in general. Sammy did take her on a 20 min how is she feeling ride and she was mostly okay. A little bit of pain anticipation was evident but that should fade with successful rides. A few more days for her and she should be able to get back into work. Circe is a lot less lame. I sent video of her trotting right, left and straight lines to my farrier who assured me she was better then i thought she…

Peas in a pod

Life with Jezebel, OTTB, Vet
[caption id="attachment_1533" align="alignleft" width="300"] Bad Belly[/caption] Were are a lot alike. We both over think stuff, we both have beautiful show pony hair and we both have to deal with ulcers. I know how it feels so when Jez came up ouchy (not to mention the behavioral issues) for ulcers again, my heart sank. I didn't have enough omeprazole for treatment and would have to get more. Only it takes many weeks when you order it from overseas. I ordered it anyways and counted out how many days i had on hand. Not enough, so i started looking for a way to get my hands on some that A. wouldn't require an RX (another vet bill in my life was not needed) B. wouldn't break the bank. I found some UlcerGard…
